Very interesting topic and thoughts. The congestion in Halifax has me refusing to drive there.

Now the Tories have promised to eliminate bridge tolls. My prediction: this will render the bridges almost useless due to additional congestion. Why not eliminate transit fares instead?

Hey Deny, what are your thoughts on the liberals platform to eliminate transit fares in Nova Scotia? combined with road tolls, it seems it could be very effective to reduce congestion..

Deny, some good data and food for thought. From the data gathered with all the facts, analyze them and pick out the obvious solutions and use funds raised by roads for roads. I wonder what Obvious Adams would say about Halifax transportation?

Based on recent experience in Halifax, I am happy I don’t live in the South End. Getting out of town from there has become a nightmare.

How do you do a cordon? Does that mean every vehicle needs a tracking device like a MacPass or can the toll be docked from your mobile phone if it is detected in the zone in a vehicle? Would residents inside the cordon also have to pay or just those visiting? Maybe you don’t have the answers but just throwing out some questions.

I love living in the South End because I get to walk past the traffic to get everywhere.

Did your study indicate the price point required on each road to significantly reduce traffic?

I think it was your piece that mentioned the toll on the Macdonald bridge when it opened was like 40 cents. I can’t remember the exact figure, but it was insane on inflation-adjusted basis, but people went for it.

We tried, but didnt find much on pricing - this that's largely a difficulty of comparing price points across countries and many years, not to mention comparing highways to tunnels etc.. I do think any price , even $1 would get the most bang for your buck in terms of reducing traffic. Original toll on MacDonald was about $5 in todays dollars

Do you think the Nova Scotia government would ever do that and push all of that money into transit?

Currently, no. Suburban and rural voters wouldn't like that. Maybe some day (after big cities have pulled it off)
